Oak or walnut? A plain-spoken comparison

Two of our most-asked-for woods side by side: colour, hardness, cost, and how each one lives with daylight.

Most of our clients narrow it down to these two. Both are beautiful, both last a lifetime, and both suit very different rooms.

Colour and character

European oak is honey to straw in tone, with a strong open grain. American black walnut is a deep chocolate brown with softer, wavier figure. Oak feels relaxed. Walnut feels considered.

Hardness and wear

Oak is the harder of the two, so it is our first choice for worktops, stair treads and anything that gets daily use. Walnut is still tough, but it shows dents a little sooner on surfaces that take a beating.

Cost

Walnut timber costs roughly forty percent more than oak. On a full kitchen that often adds around ten percent to the final price, because labour stays the same.
